HomeServer2 lets you share any folder from your Windows PC to every device on your home network in under 30 seconds. No router settings, no cloud uploads, no accounts — just pick a folder and go.
No router settings · No port forwarding · Works on any device browser
Not all file sharing is equal. Here is how HomeServer2 stacks up against the most common alternatives for sharing files on your home or office network.
| Method | Setup Time | Works on Mobile | Private / Local | File Size Limit | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| HomeServer2 | Under 30 sec | Any browser | 100% local | No limit | Free forever |
| Cloud storage (Google Drive, Dropbox) | Minutes | Yes (app needed) | Uploads to cloud | 15 GB free tier | Paid above free tier |
| USB drives | Seconds | Needs adapter | Local only | Drive capacity | Hardware cost |
| Windows built-in sharing (SMB) | 15–30 minutes | App required | Local only | No limit | Free (built-in) |
HomeServer2 removes every barrier between your files and your devices. There is nothing to configure and nothing to install on the devices that receive files.
Download and run the Windows installer. A Start Menu shortcut is created automatically — launch takes under two seconds.
Click Add Folder or drag any folder directly from Windows Explorer into the app. Add as many folders as you need.
Hit Start Server. HomeServer2 auto-detects your local IP and displays a ready-to-copy URL and scannable QR code.
Type or paste the URL into any browser on the same Wi-Fi or LAN — phone, tablet, laptop, smart TV. Browse and download instantly.
Every feature in HomeServer2 is designed around one idea: fast, private file access on your own network without touching the internet.
HomeServer2 reads every active network interface on your PC — Wi-Fi, Ethernet, and virtual adapters — and shows you a clickable URL for each one. There is no manual IP hunting: the right address is always right in front of you, ready to copy or scan as a QR code.
Because HomeServer2 serves files over standard HTTP, the receiving device only needs a browser. Android phones, iPhones, iPads, Chromebooks, Linux laptops, smart TVs — they all work without installing anything. Open the URL, browse your folders, tap to download.
Add your Movies folder, your Music library, your Documents — all at the same time. Each folder appears as its own browsable section on the network page. Remove any folder with one click without restarting the server.
A real-time stats bar at the bottom of the app shows the number of unique devices that have connected in the last 60 seconds, the current network speed, and total server uptime. You always know exactly who is browsing your shared files.
Everything you need to know before you download.
Local network file sharing — sometimes called LAN file sharing — lets you access files stored on one device from another device that is connected to the same Wi-Fi router or wired switch, without sending anything to the internet. HomeServer2 turns your Windows PC into a small HTTP file server: select which folders to share, start the server, and any other device on the same network can browse and download those files from a regular web browser. Nothing leaves your home network.
Yes, completely. HomeServer2 communicates only over your local network (LAN or Wi-Fi). No internet connection is required to run the app, share files, or receive files. Your router does not even need to have internet access — all that matters is that your PC and the receiving device are on the same local network. Your files never leave your network.
Yes. There is no device limit. Any number of phones, tablets, or laptops on your network can open the server URL simultaneously and browse or download files in parallel. The live stats bar in the app shows you the count of unique device IPs that have connected in the last 60 seconds, so you always have visibility into who is accessing your files.
Windows built-in sharing uses the SMB protocol, which requires setting up user accounts and permissions, enabling network discovery, and configuring firewall rules — a process that can take 15 to 30 minutes even for experienced users. It also only works well between Windows machines or devices that have a dedicated SMB client installed. HomeServer2 serves files over plain HTTP, the same protocol your browser already uses. This means any device with a modern browser — Android, iPhone, iPad, Chromebook, Linux, or macOS — can access your shared folders immediately with zero configuration on the client side.
Yes. HomeServer2 is freeware — free to download and use with no trial period, no subscription fee, and no features locked behind a paywall. Multi-folder sharing, PIN-protected uploads, live stats, QR codes, eight built-in themes, and all future updates are included at no cost. If you find it useful, voluntary support via PayPal or UPI is appreciated but entirely optional.
Download HomeServer2 for Windows and have your folders accessible on every device in your home or office in under a minute.
